Residential Mitigation Activities: Acquisitions, Demolitions and Mitigation/Reconstruction – What you need to know

May 25, 2022, 12:00 - 1:30

Webinar presented by: Thomas Hughes, Director of the Emergency Management Mitigation, Insurance and Resilient Communities Office at the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.

The most common hazard mitigation project is the acquisition and demolition of flood-risk homes or “buyouts.” The acquisition is considered the best mitigation because it eliminates the hazard of flooding in a risk area – no homes, no losses. Although neither as common nor as effective as acquisition or relocation out of the floodplain, home elevation and mitigation/reconstruction mitigation options and approaches are also viable and more palatable for built-out communities. During this webinar, PEMA State Hazard Mitigation Officer Tom Hughes will explain the special concerns related to all 3 options and what goes into these grant applications, and how PEMA evaluates projects for funding.
